I won the Stanford ETL T-shirt Contest!

The Stanford Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders coordinators let me know on Wednesday that I am the winner of the T-Shirt contest I entered earlier this week!

They will be printing my shirt design and giving shirts away FOR FREE to all ETL students! (It looks like they have the whole Nike trademark issue sorted out. After all, Stanford has one of the largest Nike sponsorships in the world!) Here are the final images for the shirt.

They wanted Adobe Illustrator files of the design, so I had to learn to use Adobe Illustrator, which I’ve never used before. After about an hour, I was fluent with many of Illustrator’s powerful drawing tools. The most difficult part was drawing the Nike logo. I had to use an example Nike logo which I decreased the opacity on and then traced. Illustrator’s drawing/tracing tools are tricky at first, but very intuitive once you get the hang of them.

What do you guys think of the designs? I’m curious for some feedback since I’ve never designed a t-shirt before. Leave me a comment and let me know!

Stanford Entrepreneurs Nike T-Shirt (Just Start Up)

Stanford Entreprenuers - Just Start Up

This is the t-shirt concept I submitted for the Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders T-Shirt contest.

The Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders seminar that I attend every week at Stanford is having a T-Shirt contest. The winner gets to see their design on the class shirt and gets a $50 prize. I’m assuming that students will have to purchase the shirt (unless the sponsor Draper Fisher Jurvetson is really generous and wants to buy shirts for 100+ people, which wouldn’t surprise me).

I decided to throw together a quick design. The idea was inspired by a fellow CS section leader, Aditya Acharya, who used a similar design for the section leader t-shirt contest.

UPDATE (4/23): I won the T-Shirt contest! Read this followup post for more info.

Halting Problem Poem

Alan Turing's Halting Problem

Alan Turing's Halting Problem

When I was taking CS103: Mathematical Foundations of Computing last quarter, the TAs sent us a wonderful little poem about the Halting Problem that I thought I’d share. The poem is clever, funny, and it helps to clarify what can be quite a difficult concept for many students to wrap their heads around.

I realize this won’t make sense for anyone who’s not a computer science person, so if that’s you then please enjoy this hamster eating a carrot instead of reading this poem. Read the rest of this entry »

I met Condoleezza Rice Today

Nice to meet you Condoleezza Rice

"Nice to meet you. My name is Feross, what's your name?"

Condi Rice gives a talk about foreign policy to my dorm at Stanford.

I met Condi today.

First of all, let me say that this is not an April Fools joke, even though today is April 1st.

Condoleezza Rice visited my dorm, Freshman-Sophomore College (or FroSoCo for short), to give a 1 hour talk about foreign policy and take our questions. She was invited to speak here by our awesome Dean, John Bravman, who is also the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education and my Academic Advisor.

She rolled up to our dorm at 6:00pm with at least 3 security guards (yes, they all had the little secret agent ear pieces in their ears). They escorted her into our dorm’s lounge through the back patio entrance to a waiting crowd of about 90 students. Dean Bravman introduced her and everyone applauded loudly.

I Just Discovered a Cool Website Called “Google”

April 1st, 2009 | 10,315 views | 6 Comments » |
I am glad I just discovered this website today.

I am glad I just discovered this website today.

Today while perusing the Internet, I discovered this really cool website. It’s called a “search engine,” which Wikipedia defines as:

  • “A Web search engine is a tool designed to search for information on the World Wide Web.”

It lets you search for all sorts of cool information on the Internet, like news articles, videos, blog posts, and more. One thing, though — it has a funny name, Google — but don’t let that turn you off, it’s a great website and I highly recommend it.

Check it out! Just type http://www.google.com into your Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator browser and see for yourself!

UPDATE: This was a post I did for April Fools Day 2009.
